Professional services firm KPMG has been named the ‘Best Big Company to Work For’ in the prestigious Sunday Times Best Companies awards, for an unprecedented third time. It is the second successive year that KPMG has won the award, with the firm coming in the top three every year since the Big Company category was created in 2005. The Sunday Times Best Companies awards are the biggest survey of workplace opinion in the UK. In the ‘Big Company’ category, over 51,000 employees from 49 companies (5,000 employees or more) were canvassed for their opinions on their employer.

KPMG is joined by PricewaterhouseCoopers, placed 7th, 11th in 2008; Deloitte, 9th, 12th in 2008; Accenture, 12th; and Mouchel, ranked at 16, same as last year.

John Griffith-Jones, chairman of KPMG in the UK, said: “We are delighted and extremely proud to be named ‘Best Big Company to Work For’ for the third time. These awards reflect the views of employees themselves – that is why they are so valued. At KPMG, our aim is to create a workplace where individuals are respected, where there is a culture of openness and mutual support, and where teams work together to deliver the best possible service for clients.

“These are difficult times for the UK economy, and for companies and employees everywhere. The state of the economy may be beyond our immediate control but the way we work together is ours to choose. A sense of shared values and collective purpose will be more important than ever if companies are to weather the storm.”

KPMG was also very proud to receive a lifetime achievement award, which was in recognition of having been in the top three of the Best Big Companies rankings over the past five years.

PwC was also shortlisted for three awards recognising the firm’s approach to leadership, engagement with schools and colleges, and well being. It is the third year the firm has maintained a two star rating indicating ‘outstanding performance’. 90% of staff said they were proud to work for PwC, while 88% (the highest of the big four) said that working at PwC gave them great training and future prospects.

Over the past year, KPMG has continued to invest in its people and its communities:

* 1.4 million hours invested in staff training and development

* 98.5% of flexible working requests accepted

* Launch of REACH, a firm-wide two day development course specifically for women

* More than 4,500 staff (nearly 40% of the workforce) contributed 48,000 hours working with local communities and causes

* The firm’s two year support of the charity Help the Hospices raised over £1 million. KPMG has just begun a new, two year relationship with the Alzheimer’s Society

* KPMG has invested £1 million in jointly sponsoring (with the City of London Corporation) a new Academy school in Hackney, London, which is due to open in September 2009
